School board makes state nominations

The Whitehall-Coplay School Board made nominations for the Pennsylvania School Board Association’s 2016 election at its meeting Sept. 14.

The board nominated Mary Birks of Mount Lebanon School District for president-elect and Robert Schwartz of Wallenpaupack Area School District for vice president.

No nominations were made for the representative at large. Board Vice President Robert Kolb said there were excellent candidates for the representative at large, and the board didn’t know who to nominate.

In other business, district Superintendent John Corby said the first day of school was a success.

“Opening day was great,” he said. “A lot of smiles, laughs and tears. And the tears came from both the students and parents of some of the elementary kids.”

Corby also recognized the Whitehall Police Department for having a presence on the campus and for enforcing the new 15 mph speed limit on campus.

“The change from 25 to 15 mph is for the safety and security of our campus,” Corby said.

Board Treasurer Arthur Taschler Jr. also spoke about the opening day at school.

“I saw every one of the administration out in the middle of everything. That made me feel good,” he said. “They take care of our kids day in and day out.”

In other matters, the board approved a contract with Waste Management for three years from Sept. 1, 2015, to Aug. 31, 2018. The monthly charge is $3,759.50 for the months of September through June and $2,329.30 for the months of July and August.
