Girls off to hot start
Whitehall’s girls’ soccer program was optimistic they could build on their last –season momentum and success from last year.
After advancing to the state final in 2013, the Zephyrs won the PIAA District 11 Class AAA title after they lost the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference (EPC) crown to Parkland on penalty kicks. They finished with an overall 19-6 record, but they lost leading scorer Kourtney Cunningham, who scored 41 of their 74 goals.
However, having a returning core still in place, the Zephyrs apparently haven’t missed a beat.
Whitehall flexed its muscles and began to again establish themselves as an EPC power when they recorded two impressive victories to begin this season,
The Zephyrs blasted Dieruff, 15-0, in their opener, and then followed with a 2-0 shutout over Freedom.
Against Dieruff, Kaylee Cunningham and Ivanna Jones – both who will be key contributors this season-tallied three goals apiece. Jones scored both of her team’s goals in the victory over Freedom.
“They are both off to great starts,” said head coach Dave Weitzman about Cunningham and Jones. “They have worked very hard and will be leaders for us. It was a real boost for us to get our offense going.”
Weitzman already has high expectations for his team.
“Things have been great,” said the second-year head coach. “I really love this team. We lost some players, but we have a good core of them back who took us to the district title. We have had two pretty good games and this is a very good start.
“We need to win early games in this league.”
Weitzman believes he can gain a better perspective on his team when they will battle Central Catholic, Nazareth, and Northampton this week.
“I think we’ll have a good feel after this week,” he stated. “We will certainly be tested against those teams. We’ll know where we are after Friday.”
Regardless of the outcomes, Weitzman sees his club on an accelerated pace.
“I think we are a little bit ahead of schedule,” he added. “We knew we lost a lot of offense from Kourtney (Cunningham), but we have been impressive in putting the ball in the net. We have some good chemistry with his team and we have a group of girls who have experience the post season.
“We’re headed in a good direction and we’ll know better after this week.”
