’Canes start strong

Bragging rights switched over to Liberty High School’s boys’ soccer team earlier this month when the Hurricanes defeated Moravian Academy, the defending Class A state champion, by a score of 4-0.

It was the perfect start to the Hurricanes’ 2015 season, one of high hopes and high expectations for coach Jason Horvath. Last season, Moravian Academy won against the Hurricanes 1-0.

Liberty scored all of its goals in the second half against the Lions. Trevor Koski, Sammy Abiles, Michael Visperas, and Abe Meral had one goal apiece. Valentine Perevalov had two assists while Koski had one.

The Hurricanes continued the season last week with a 3-1 victory over Allentown Central Catholic and a 3-1 victory over Southern Lehigh.

Colin Muller, Matthew Collins, and Meral scored Liberty’s goals, all in the first half, against the Vikings. Koski and Perevalov had one assist each.

Wilmer Aleman, Xander Kang, and Muller scored Liberty’s goals against the Spartans, and assists were made by Meral, Koski, and Abiles.

Also last week, Freedom defeated Whitehall 2-0 on goals by Mezen Abdalla. Michael Silva and DJ Bast had the assists, all in the second half.

The Patriots lost this past weekend, however, in their game against Wilson-West Lawn, by a score of 4-1. Bast scored Freedom’s only goal in the second half on an assist by Chris Szymanski.

Bethlehem Catholic, still adjusting to a new season under new coaches, lost to Parkland 10-0 and Salisbury 5-1. Antonio Tavares scored Becahi’s only goal in the second half.
