’Canes knock off PHS

A win over Parkland in any sport is always a satisfying feeling and the Liberty field hockey team hopes they can carry that momentum over into this week’s East Penn Conference slate.

The Hurricanes (2-1) knocked off the Trojans 3-2 last Friday, scoring three goals in the second half for the win.

Lucy Kitch-Peck, McKenna Burkhardt and Sadie Abboud scored for Liberty in the win, as Liberty rebounded from a 2-1 defeat to Northampton (3-0) earlier in the week.

“The win over Parkland (4-1) came at a good time,” said Liberty head coach Mary Kate Omdahl. “It will set the tone for the competitive games we have in the next two weeks.”

That starts with Tuesday’s clash against Stroudsburg (2-0) followed by Pocono Mountain East (3-1) and East Stroudsburg North (1-4) to round out the week.

“We want to come out fast and maintain a good pace,” said Omdahl about this week’s goals. “Excited to get back on the turf after some grass games. It’s a good beginning of season test with a taste of what the playoffs might be like. This is definitely a good week to build some momentum going in to divisional play. We need to make winning a habit.”

With the Hurricanes getting tested early by two of the EPC’s top teams at the moment, Omdahl is pleased with what her group has been able to do thus far in the season.

“We learned we need to play for the entire 60 minutes with no let down,” she said. “I learned we have perseverance and they are experiencing winning by really having to work for it.”

Freedom (2-3) and Bethlehem Catholic (0-5) are both off to different starts, as the Pates have only been able to muster wins over Wilson and Becahi this season, coming away with a 2-0 win over the Hawks on Saturday. Erica Heaney and Emerald Mayo scored second half goals for the Pates to lead them past their struggling city rivals.

With Pleasant Valley (1-3), East Stroudsburg South (2-1) and Pocono Mountain West (1-3) up this week, Freedom has a chance to keep themselves in the .500 range.

The Hawks take their slate of northern action this week against East Stroudsburg North and Stroudsburg.

Becahi is still looking for their first goal of the season and could land that when they play ESN on Tuesday.
