U. Mac limits recycling

The electronic recycling and shredding events in Upper Macungie Township are gathering much attention.

However, this is costing money as much of the recycling material comes from non-township residents.

As there is no fee for this service, Upper Macungie must absorb the cost of removal of the items.

Supervisor Kathy Rader said, during the Sept. 4 board meeting, the township paid $12,000 the last time to dispose of the articles.

A motion was made by Supervisor Sean Gill, which was adopted, to have the recycling events limited to township residents only.

In other matters, Edward Furman, of Maillie LLP, gave his report on the township audit.

He said the township was in fine shape financially, although some suggested changes were noted for next year.

Township Manager Dan Olpere said this was the first time a full township audit was completed.

Assets of $31,566,000, including land, buildings, parks, vehicles and equipment, among other items were noted.

A letter of support will be sent to PennDOT regarding the proposed 100th anniversary parade of the Trexlertown Fire Company next year, on July 16, 2016.

The parade is in conjunction with the 119th Four County Firemen’s Association parade.

Events will start at the intersection of Weilers Road and Hamilton Boulevard and travel north on Hamilton to Route 100 in Trexlertown where the parade will make a right turn onto Route 100 and proceed to Church Road where it will end.

Upper Macungie Police Lt. Michael Sitoski gave the results of the Memorial Road speed study, which showed the current speed limit of 40 mph was adequate for the area.

He also reported the police department received a 50-percent grant of $6880.95 toward the purchase of bullet proof vests.

Olpere advised the board budget workshops are set for 6 p.m. Sept. 21 and 28; and Oct. 5 and 12.

Preliminary adoption of next year’s budget could occur Oct. 12.

The township recreation report included Pa. German classes Sept. 14 to Nov. 9 at Independent Park; adult basketball 6:30-8:30 p.m., Thursdays, at Jaindl Elementary School; pick-up volleyball, 8-10 p.m. Sept. 15 until March at Fogelsville Elementary.

For information on these events or to register, visit uppermac.org or call the township office.

The board also set Trick or Treat Night for 6-8 p.m. Oct. 30.
