LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Fullerton Ave. construction is under way

One of the region’s major bridge construction projects, with a $60 million price tag and a four-year time line, got under way in Fullerton on Tuesday.

The entire demolition and construction work is centered along the Fullerton Avenue corridor, pointing east and west of the heavily traveled road, all aligned with Route 22.

Whitehall Township Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. said the project involves three bridges, ramps and some road work.

The Route 22 bridge over the Lehigh River, east of Fullerton Avenue, will be replaced. The new bridge will allow vehicles to travel on three lanes. The east and west lanes will coordinate with a later widening of Route 22.

Hozza also said construction of the Fullerton Avenue Bridge overpass is on the docket, along with reconfiguring and constructing new and longer ramps at Fullerton Avenue. This is believed to allow for easier, safer access to and from Route 22.

Finally, the Fifth Street Bridge, just west of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church and Regional School, will be demolished, to allow for extensive changes to the ramp configuration. However, the span will be replaced, with a tentative 2020 date.

Construction signs are going up slowly. PennDOT District 5-0 Public Affairs Officer Shaun Brown told The Press detour signs will be posted for the motoring public as the need arises. Hozza said the township police department is involved in such processes to coordinate the traffic changes and make it less burdensome to drivers.

On Tuesday, utility work began at the ramps and on Fullerton Avenue. Wagman Construction, of York, is the general contractor. The township is leasing the lower east end of the Wood Street Park and Playground to Wagman and PennDOT, where large trailers have been placed for offices and staging. The playground and basketball courts are not impacted by the trailers, Hozza said.
