Statement Win
To say that Liberty fans have been waiting a long time for a moment like Saturday night is an understatement.
Amidst all the pressure of registering a trademark victory during the John Truby era, the Hurricanes went out and posted an impressive 39-34 win over Bethlehem Catholic to kick-start their season on the right foot.
Doug Erney threw for 303 yards and two scores, while rushing for another 135 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Liberty to victory.
“When you have a quarterback like Doug Erney, who’s a great leader and a great football player, you’re in good hands,” said Truby. “Doug played a great game. Our defense played great and we were able to come away with a great victory over a very good Becahi team. It’s a great start to the season for our guys.”
Liberty jumped out to a 39-13 lead Saturday night, thanks to Erney who started the game with an 82-yard TD run in the first quarter to set the tone for the night.
Erney would then hit one of six receivers on the night who caught balls, with a 37 yard TD pass to Justin Haynes to take a 21-7 lead into the second quarter.
Erney would close out the half with a 53 yard touchdown pass to Victor Santiago and then open the third quarter with a 23 yard TD run to jump the Hurricanes out to a 39-13 advantage.
Becahi scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make things interesting, but it was too little too late.
“I can’t say that I was surprised that we jumped out with such a big lead,” Truby said. “I thought we had a good game plan going into the game. I can’t say I expected the game to go that way, but I wasn’t surprised. I think we have a pretty good team.”
Liberty will play Allen (0-1) this Friday night at J. Birney Crum Stadium as the ’Canes should move to 2-0 on the season.
“We know Allen has gone through some tough times recently,” Truby said. “I want our guys to play hard on every snap. We know we’ll probably be able to get some younger guys reps and we hope they take advantage of the opportunity.”
