Liberty begins 7-0
Liberty High School’s tennis team maintained its perfect record with a 7-0 victory over East Stroudsburg South last week.
In singles matches, Samantha Peterson defeated Amanda Jackson 6-0,6-1 at number one, Madelyn Conrad defeated Lindsay Scerbo 6-0,6-0 at number two, and Katie Kametz defeated Nadia Hussein 6-3,6-1 at number three.
Kametz is new to singles play, having competed at number two doubles last year.
“It’s really different, but playing doubles was super helpful because it helps you learn the angles of the court, so I’m a lot more secure on the court. I have to run a lot more, but I’m loving every minute of it. My game has come a decent way,” she said.
Kametz came back from 0-2 deficits early in the first set against East Stroudsburg South.
“You really have to have the mental part of the game and stay up to speed,” said Kametz.
Conrad is hoping to improve upon her already outstanding record of 13-1 from last season.
“My ground strokes are a lot more solid, and I’m coming up to the net a lot more. I want to win the EPC if I can,” Conrad said.
I worked a lot on strategy, placing the ball, placing my serves. It’s all about practice, and then it comes naturally. You see an opening. It’s all about placement.”
Peterson also has become tougher and stronger since last season.
“I’m being more aggressive. My mental game got better, and I’m not focusing on what happened in the point before,” Peterson said.
Peterson’s serve has also improved.
“Especially my second serve,” she said. “My serve has been more consistent, and my footwork has gotten a lot better.”
In doubles play, Maggie Mowrer and Paige Simons defeated Kaitlin Semon and Maddie Malsch 8-3 at number one, Jackie Arthur and Briana Canady defeated Zarya Tom-Wing and Kayla Mercado 6-3,6-3 at number two, Maris Deluca and Martina Gale defeated Jennifer Facyson and Ashley Silva 6-2,6-2 at number three, and Riley Walters and Joyce Kim defeated Sarah Owusu-Afriyie and Rachel Wesselius 7-5,6-4.
