Trojans rally to top Freedom

What began as a promising tennis match for Freedom last week ended in the Patriots’ loss to Parkland 4-3.

Freedom’s number one doubles team of O. (first name unavailable) Chhugani and Jessika Klo were the first to finish their match, winning 8-3.

Patriot singles players, Kaitlyn Swint and Becky Packo finished their matches next, also winning.

The next four matches, however, went to the Trojans, as did the team victory.

At number one singles, Parkland’s Patricia Yao defeated Natalie Sinai 6-2, 7-6 (11-9).

Swint defeated Madison Staiman 6-2, 6-1.

“I was a little worried because she’s left-handed. It switches everything. Her backhand is opposite, so I had to do the opposite. That’s hard to do,” Swint said.

Once Swint got into the flow, the second set was less difficult for her.

“She was playing very well, but I hit a couple on the line to her backhand,” said Swint.

At number three singles, Packo defeated Anna Li 6-2, 6-4.

“She definitely hit with more power [in the second set]. She moved me back farther than I liked,” said Packo. “I was keeping my top spin and keeping the ball close to the baseline.”

Packo is new to singles, having played at number two doubles last year.“It’s totally different. You basically have to rely on yourself, and it’s a more open court,” she said.

In doubles, Madison McTier and Anjali Chhugani lost 3-6, 2-6 at number two, Rachel Loh and Alexa Diaz lost 7-5, 4-6, 4-6 at number three, and Meghan Smith and Gabriella Greenhoward lost 1-6, 2-6 at number four.
