Lions Club’s sweepstakes drawing fundraiser is under way

The Whitehall Lions Club’s 2015-16 fiscal year began July 1. Many activities are scheduled, which include supporting the Center for Vision Loss, collecting old eyeglasses and hearing aids, providing eye exams and glasses for those who qualify, providing trophies and scholarship money to high school students and supporting the Whitehall Township Public Library and the Whitehall Food Bank.

In order to continue the mission and support these activities, the Whitehall Lions have numerous fundraisers. The group’s 40th annual sweepstakes drawing tickets were sent via mail to township residents. Those who would like to participate in this fundraiser are asked to complete and return the ticket by Sept. 21.

Chartered in 1951, the Lions Club will celebrate its 64th year of serving others. The club sponsors two Leo Clubs: the Whitehall-Coplay Middle School Leo Club and the Whitehall High School Leo Club. The Whitehall High School Leo Club has the distinction of being the oldest continuous Leo Club in the world.

The club will continue to sponsor the Whitehall Senior Sports Recognition Night.

Speakers are scheduled for regular monthly meetings.

In the spring, the club will have a fundraiser at the American Club of Coplay. A basket social is also planned. Details will be announced later in the year.

The 2015-16 club officers are resident, Judy Ott; first vice president, Patty Vahey; second vice president, Beth Karoly; third vice president, Glenn Gray; secretary, Bob Hauck; treasurer, Craig Merkel; financial secretary, Al Sparrow; and Den Scraps, Tom Lindeman.

The club meets 6 p.m. the first and third Mondays of the month at Fellowship Community. Recruiting new members is an ongoing activity. The club had more than a 15-percent gain in membership during fiscal year 2014-15. Any man or woman interested in volunteering is encouraged to consider joining the Whitehall Lions.
