Kids set for football season opener
Northampton broke their 19-game losing streak a year ago when they topped Allen 40-6 in last year’s season opener.
Heading into this Friday’s 2015 opening contest, the K-Kids are looking for more of the same as they travel to J. Birney Crum Stadium Friday night.
As head coach Mark Scisly enters his second-year at the helm of the program after last year’s 3-9 finish, Northampton looks to win their third-straight game dating back to the end of last season.
While Scisly plans to have a more balanced offensive attack, expect the Kids to use a heavy dose of their running game against Allen if recent history tells us anything.
Northampton rushed for 337 yards last year against Allen, as running back Andrew Szerencsits led the pack with 137 yards on the ground.
Despite Allen finishing last season 0-10, Scisly isn’t entering this tilt taking them for granted.
“They look like a much improved team from last year and appear to be much faster than they were in 2014,” he said. “Our team is getting better everyday. We’re doing a much better job of understanding our assignments and working as a team this year. Everyone needs to come prepared to play.”
As with most football games, Scisly will look to the trenches as a key point of emphasis to ensure victory.
“We need to control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and not make mistakes in our special teams,” said Scisly.
With this being year two of his regime, the veteran football coach has seen progress from his team on both sides of the ball and hopes that can translate into being a more competitive team throughout the season.
“We did a nice job in our scrimmages moving the ball offensively and we were much more balanced (run/pass) than we were last year,” he said. “Defensively, we have been very aggressive and running to the football to make tackles. We are becoming more balanced and doing a better job understanding the system.”
