Running Rambles: weather tips
It’s late August and summer is flexing its last humid muscles upon us. However, runners should not be discouraged despite temperatures surging into the 90s and humidity rising in unison at times.
Here are a couple of thoughts as well as some upcoming races in the area:
WATER AND MORE: With temperatures rising, water is an essential. Before your run, make sure you drink plenty of water. If you’re throat becomes dry and earnestly feel that sensation, you don’t have enough water in your system.
If possible, cut some pieces of oranges, grapes, blueberries, peaches and either use a blender to mix them to make a watery solution. Fresh fruit and water is a great stimulator before your run. Peanut butter, granola bars, and raisins are also a good source of energy. A bowl of one to two packs of instant oatmeal is also good. Remember, eat light before your run and eat heavy afterwards. Don’t make mistakes like I did and try to eat a cheesesteak and not drink enough water. Your fuel tank will not be full.
After your run, Gatorade and PowerAde aren’t always instant remedy. Yes, they provide electrolytes, but they are also loaded with sugars. Water can be a simple solution along with protein. Eat your cheesesteak after your run.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS: There are a handful of local races in late August. However, September signals the beginning of Autumn and races will be back in the mix. Look ahead to race sites to plan your races accordingly. September, October, and early November are all great months to run, and there are races throughout the Lehigh Valley and beyond. Northeast Pennsylvania.
IRONTON TRAIL RUN 10K, Aug. 29 – The race will be part of Coplay Community Days and will begin at Saylor Park at 10:30 a.m. for walkers and 11 for runners. Cost is $40. Check the websites, www.byrnmawrracing.com or www.runsignup.com.
Don’t forget the Runner’s World Half Marathon and Festival the weekend of Oct. 16-18. Along with the half marathon, there is a 5K and 10K race. Check the website, www.runnersworld.com
Your comments, suggestions, and critiques are always welcome. Always plan accordingly and keep running!
