Bulls win BML title

The Limeport Bulls walked off with a 3-2, extra innings win over the Northern Yankees Friday in the Blue Mountain League Championship.

The series went the full five games, with Emmaus grad Matt Godusky hitting a line drive to right-center field for the game winner in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Yankees won game four on their home field in Coplay to send the series back to Limeport for the fifth and final game. Adam Maini threw 6 1/3 strong innings for Limeport, but started to run out of gas in the seventh. With Limeport leading 2-1, Maini got the first out of the inning before walking the next two batters, prompting a pitching change that brought Nick Bowen into the game. Bowen struck out the first batter he faced, but Andrew Brandstetter then dropped a bloop single into left field to tie the game. Bowen would walk the next batter before getting out of the jam on a fly ball by Rick Seltzer.

Casey Cooperman put down the Bulls in order in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. Bowen retired all three batters that he faced in the top of the eighth, to set the stage for the dramatic hit by Godusky.

Leadoff man Mike Cudwadie led off the inning with an infield single and went to second on an errant throw by Cooperman. Preston Amato hit a fly ball to right to move Cudwadie to third with one out and Yankees manager Brian Polaha elected to walk Damin Muth to set up the double-play. Juan Ortiz hit a slow roller to the first base side of the mound, giving Cooperman just one play, to first. Polaha then decided to walk Dan Hemberger to face Godusky, who was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in the game. That’s when Godusky delivered his game-winner to right-center field, with Cudwadie dancing home from third.

“Well, quite frankly, I was disrespected,” said Godusky of seeing Hemberger walked ahead of him. “I’ve been struggling and they thought they could take advantage of it. I just went back to the basics and he threw a good pitch to hit that I was taking early on in the game and I didn’t try to do too much.”

Bulls manager Ray Ganser wasn’t surprised that Godusky came through in a key spot and was glad to see him get the big hit, but disagreed with Godusky on the respect issue.

“He’s a good player and he was struggling, so it was nice to see him come through there and just poke the ball through. If I were them [the Yankees], I would have done the same thing, because he was struggling. He just picked the right spot to get back on track,” said Ganser.

The Yanks took an early lead with a run in the first. A groundout by Seltzer scored Brandstetter, who walked to leadoff the game and went to third on a single by Chad Cooperman, that was accompanied by a throwing error. Limeport came back with two in the third to take the lead, with Muth and Hemberger RBI singles.

The home team hadn’t won a game in the series until Limeport won in game five.
