Walbert named to library group

Coplay Borough Council moved to appoint the Rev. Gary Walbert to the Coplay Library Board at its Aug. 11 meeting.

Walbert transferred from his Catasauqua parish to Coplay. He has experience working with Catasauqua's library, and his past experience will help move Coplay's library board as it continues to attract a broader clientele.

In other business, the board approved the purchase of 500 twenty-gallon recycling containers.

"We make the purchase as we have funds from the recycling grants. Containers get destroyed or lost. We have them available to residents if needed," said Borough Secretary Sandra Gyecsek.

Council unanimously approved the $7,105 purchase.

Council approved a fire department coin toss for Sept. 5. This is one of the few fundraising events for the volunteer fire department.

Resident John Schreiner questioned the wording of a resolution changing the borough's official sewage facilities plan.

According to Gyecsek, the Environmental Protection Agency requires that the borough's plan be modified with every subdivision change.

The borough approved the Erick subdivision plan at an earlier session. Schreiner questioned the moniker.

"These plans are usually called Act 537 plans and it helps to keep the standard name so they can be readily identified," he said.

Schreiner chairs the Coplay-Whitehall Sewer Authority.

The community plaza, the area near the Giant Foods store, got some touch-up work from Lowe's. Lowe's selected the borough for one of its community projects, which included plants and hardscaping in the area.

"They put most of it in earlier and came back to complete the task last week," said Councilman Charles Sodl. "They really worked hard in the heat to get this ready. The Lowe's volunteers use their time off to come out here to help us."

Sodl indicated in the past that the next improvement will be memorial benches.

Council and local volunteers wanted to see the area completed in time for Community Days festivities, set for Aug. 28-30.

"People coming to Community Days will get a chance to see what the plaza looks like and the improvement it makes to that corner of the borough," said Councilman Stephen Burker, after the meeting.
