Smoke forces building evacuation

Fire crews from South Whitehall Township, Salisbury, Emmaus and Lower Macungie fire departments responded Aug. 11 to reports of smoke in a building at 1243 S. Cedar Crest Blvd.

The fire was reported around 10:30 a.m. and first arriving units from Western Salisbury Fire Department confirmed there was smoke in the building.

Workers and visitors were evacuated.

Firefighters found the smoke was coming from an equipment malfunction in the elevator machinery room.

A problem with one of the elevator motors caused oil to overheat.

Firefighters shut off power to the motor and remained on the scene for more than an hour working to ventilate smoke with fans and using deodorizers.

No injuries were reported and the staff and visitors were allowed to enter the building after the smoke cleared.
