'Valley Vivaldi' concert is season-ender
Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra presents the fourth and final summer concert in its "Valley Vivaldi" series, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 16, Wesley Church, 2540 Center St., Bethlehem.
The concert is intended to pull out all the stops, combining music that is among the most recognized and best-loved in the classical repertoire with an internationally-accomplished guest performer greatly admired in the Lehigh Valley.
One highlight is "The Four Seasons" by Antonio Vivaldi, a joyous, familiar piece. In four distinct concertos, the instruments deftly create an aural picture of nature and the characteristic weather in each of the year's seasons. Joining the Valley Vivaldi ensemble musicians as guest soloist for the work is violinist Paul Chou.
Chou taught orchestral studies at Lehigh University for 13 years and founded the Lehigh University Philharmonic Orchestra. During this period (the 1990's and into the 2000's) he performed often with the Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra. His musical career also took him around the globe to China, Europe, Latin America and Africa, as well as appearances at the Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C.
Chou maintains a dual life as not just an active musician, but with a professional career in business that began on Wall Street before his time at Lehigh. He held senior executive positions at PaineWebber and Balfour Maclaine Corp. and is now a Senior Client Partner at Korn-Ferry International. He and his wife and son live in Gladwyne, Montgomery County. Chou is music director of the newly-formed Steamboat Chamber Orchestra, Steamboat Springs, Col.
The concert opens with the Oboe d'amore concerto in A, BWV 1055 by J. S. Bach. Soloist for the piece is Cheryl Bishkoff, principal oboist for the Sinfonia, who also performs regularly with the Rhode Island Philharmonic, Symphony New Hampshire, Boston Symphony and Boston Ballet.
The program features a Baroque work for large ensemble, Sinfonia Concertante in A minor by Czech composer Jan Dismas Zelenka. Frequent attendees of Valley Vivaldi have become more familiar with Zelenka's intricate harmonies and counterpoint in recent summers, as Sinfonia Music Director Dr. Allan Birney has programmed several Zelenka works.
In addition to Chou and Bishkoff, orchestra personnel for the program are violinists Mary Ogletree and Rebecca Brown, violist Agnès Maurer, cellist Naomi Gray, double bassist Nancy Merriam, oboist Nobuo Kitagawa, bassoonist Susan Shaw and harpsichordist Allan Birney.
A reception with refreshments follows the concert.
Although the "Valley Vivaldi" series will not reappear until next summer, concert-goers can take comfort in knowing that the Sinfonia's regular season of orchestral concerts begins Oct. 3.
