Musikfest: Doors Down is the rock band next door

3 Doors Down, a multi-platinum American rock bank from Mississippi, performs at Musikfest, 8:30 p.m. Aug. 13, Sands Steel Stage, PNC Plaza, SteelStacks, Bethlehem.

Collective Soul performs at 7 p.m. Eighteenth Hour performs at 6 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m.

3 Doors Down is: Brad Arnold, lead singer; Chris Henderson, guitar; Chet Roberts, guitar; Justin Biltonen, bass, and Greg Upchurch, drums.

"We've been through our ups and downs," said Arnold in a phone interview. "Life is a twisted road. Every curve ball ... You can either watch it pass or swing at it and watch how far you can hit it. We don't crawl up on a soapbox and judge anybody. We play in a rock and roll band and that is awesome."

3 Doors Down has sold more than 16 million albums world-wide and received three Grammy nominations, two American Music Awards and five BMI Pop Awards and BMI Songwriter of the Year Award.

The group has formed its own charity, The Better Life Foundation, with which it presents annual concerts to raise funds for those who have survived catastrophes. One of the concerts benefitted Hurricane Katrina survivors, which hit home for the band members who hail from one of the states affected by the disaster.

"This is the 11th year and the foundation continues to grow. We see a need to help fix the problem. Recently, we contributed to buy beds for Ebola patients in Africa. I am very proud to be a part of the foundation."

3 Doors Down, formed in 1995, has had several hits, including "Kryptonite," "Loser," "When I'm Gone" and "Here Without You."

"By the grace of God and our incredible fans, we've been fortunate enough to look out at the faces in the crowd and see our fans looking back at us, singing our songs back to us.

"Being able to touch people like that is what it's all about. It has taught me so much and that so many people have the same feelings. We are all the same."

The band is working on its sixth album, "Us And The Night," set for release in early 2016.

"It's a little bit different, not kooky but more fun. The songs on the album are songs you want to jam to. There is still meaning behind the songs, but people will have a good time listening to the record."
