Schools open for the 2015-2016 school year in one month

As much as I hate to say it, and trust me, I do, school is now a month away. So, in between your summer fun and relaxation, you might want to start preparing for the first day.

Western Salisbury Elementary School and Salisbury Middle School have the supply lists for each grade on their websites. This is just a guideline, but it is there to make life and learning a lot easier for your student and the teacher. Organization is a key element to education and the earlier we teach our students this, the better.

The next thing on your agenda should be any health screenings your student needs. Physicals are required for grades kindergarten, sixth, 11th and any new student entering the district.

Dental exams are required for grades kindergarten, third, seventh and new students entering the district.

If you prefer to have these completed by your own doctors, make your appointments now. The required forms are on the website of each school under Health Services.

The last two community workshops are coming up.

Denise Continenza, Penn State Extension, will present "What makes my child tick?" 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug 5 at Western Salisbury Jerusalem Church. Find out what makes some children easy to manage while others drive adults to exhaustion.

Continenza will also present "Lend me your ear" 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug.18 at Western Salisbury Jerusalem Church. She will discuss how communication is often the cause of family conflicts.

All sessions are offered free of charge; however, participants must register online at stsd.org/rsvp or call Mary Bishop at 610-797-2062.

Summer library hours for Salisbury Township Schools will be held 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 11 at Salisbury High School and hosted by Robin Burns.

The first day of practice for Salisbury Township School District fall sports will be Aug. 17.

A school board meeting will be held 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19 at the administration building.

Western Salisbury Jerusalem Church has one more concert in the summer concert series. Satori, a quartet consisting of a flute, violin, cello and classical guitar, will perform 7:30 p.m. Aug. 20.

The Devonshire yard waste drop-off site will be open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 15 and 18.
