32nd year has 550 free performances

Musikfest, which takes place in Downtown Bethlehem's Historic District and Southside Bethlehem's SteelStacks, has 325-plus artists performing for its 32nd year, Aug. 7 - 16, Bethlehem.

The festival has free music on 15 of its 16 stages, with 550 free music and art performances, the most in the event's history.

Headlining performances at the Sands Steel Stage are the Flaming Lips, Aug. 7; Culture Club, Aug. 8; O.A.R. with Allen Stone, Aug. 9; Jerry Seinfeld, Aug. 10; Reba McEntire, Aug. 11; ZZ Top, Aug. 12; 3 Doors Down and Collective Soul, Aug. 13; Darius Rucker, Aug. 14; Snoop Dogg, Aug. 15, and Alice in Chains, Aug. 16.

Preview night, Aug. 6, is headlined by Duran Duran, returning to Musikfest for the first time in 15 years.

On Aug. 12 at Aetna Americaplatz, Kristian Bush of platinum-selling country duo Sugarland performs. Cracker, which performs Aug. 14 at Volksplatz, has been rocking audiences for nearly a quarter-century.

Also: two-time Blues Music Award "Band of the Year" winners Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials, Aug. 13; New Orleans trumpet player Glen David Andrews and his band, Aug. 14, 15; Celtic act Scythian, Aug. 11, 12; New Orleans-based Mississippi Rail Company, Aug. 15; Mardi Gras Indian Funk Band Cha Wa, Aug. 11, 12; Chilean superstar Manuel Garcia, Aug. 9; Love Canon, which plays bluegrass versions of 1980s hits, Aug. 14, and bachata star Karlos Rosé headlines a night of Latin music, Aug. 15.

Highlighting this year's family fun is a 200-foot long zip line at Kinderplatz, which will give attendees a bird's-eye view of the festival.

Other new rides for 2015 include Topical Rainforest Inflatable Playground, Swing Ride, Mini Train Ride, and All in One Combo.

A new Musikfest "Fester in Training" children's mug is available. There's also the new Musikfest "Artie" plush owl.

Kinderplatz new free art activities are chalk murals and themed craft days: The Great Outdoors, Aug.12; Around The World at Musikfest, Aug. 13, and a Mad Scientists theme featuring science projects, Aug. 14.

On Aug. 11, 12, the Girls Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania offer a special activity. On Aug. 12, Habitat for Humanity of the Lehigh Valley hosts a "Make Your Own Bug Box" activity.

Headphone Disco, 5 - 11 p.m. Aug. 11 - 16, Handwerkplatz, offers attendees sets of headphones to listen to dance music or rock 'n' roll as DJs spin sets side by side from Headphone Disco's stage.

Polyglot Theatre, a contemporary theater company from South Yarra, Australia, presents its "Ants" show, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 7; 2, 4, 6 p.m. Aug. 8 - 10 and 8 p.m., Aug. 7 - 10, Handwerkplatz, featuring super-sized ants in a roving, interactive performance.

Two dance companies from New York City will perform adjacent to the towering blast furnaces at SteelStacks. DanceNow presents shows by the festival's contemporary dance artists in residence: Take Dance, 5:30, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 7 - 9, and B.S. Movement, 5:30, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 14 - 16, both Air Products Town Square.

Admission to Musikfest stages is free with the exception of Sands Steel Stage performances. Musikfest has 60 food vendors and 40 artisans.

Musikfest, presented by the nonprofit ArtsQuest, is made possible in part through the support of more than 150 corporate partners, 2,000 volunteers and 2,200 supporting ArtsQuest members.
