BAVTS: Bridges to the future - Talented students receive scholarships to continue education

If you needed a cabinet built, or a health assessment, or a web page designed, the recent Bridges Foundation "Celebration of Excellence" was a good spot to be.

These are just a few of the many eclectic talents possessed by area high school students who received scholarship money from the foundation to continue their education.

Of the 75 Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School students who applied, 16 of the brightest and most accomplished applicants received awards.

Ana Carvalho - Ana is a talented graduated senior at Freedom and a baking and pastry arts student at vo-tech. She plans to attend the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. An Honor Roll student, Ana also works in the bakery at Valley Farm Market and plans to run her own bakery someday.

Lauren Colon - Lauren is a graduated senior at Freedom and a cosmetology student at vo-tech. She has been a high honor roll student at Freedom since her freshman year, maintained an A average, and even had perfect attendance at Vo-Tech.

Andrew Dauphin - An Eagle Scout, Andrew is also a graduated senior at Bethlehem Catholic HS. He's maintained an A-average while studying electrical construction. Last year he won the district competition for electrical construction wiring and placed second in the state.

Natalie Flores - Natalie is a graduated senior at Liberty and a member of vo-tech's graphic communications program. In addition to her studies, Natalie plays field hockey and volunteers at a local soup kitchen. She received the preeminent $5,000 Walter Dealtrey Distinguished Scholar Award.

Emma Gehringer - Emma is also a graduated senior at Bethlehem Catholic. She's been a part of the Academy of Medical Sciences program and plans to attend Mount Saint Mary's and major in pre-med. Emma has also been a talented volleyball player for the Golden Hawks and plans to play in college.

Domanick Gonzalez - A seeming jack of all trades, Domanick is a volunteer firefighter, a track athlete, a member of the National Honor Society at Liberty HS, and an aspiring nursing student.

Jeremy Kuba - Jeremy maintained a 3.675 GPA at Saucon Valley HS where he competed in track and basketball. He also volunteers with children and the Sixth Street Shelter for the homeless.

Noelle Moser - Noelle is a second-year web design and animation student from Northampton HS. She earned a 3.35 GPA while also participating in the marching band, concert band, chorus, step team and school orchestra.

Alexander Ramos - Alexander is also a second-year web design and animation student. He earned a 3.9-4.0 GPA at Liberty HS. Alexander also volunteered with special needs children and for the Special Olympics.

Jaileen Ruiz - A graduated senior at Freedom HS, Jaileen is a fashion industries student who plans to pursue a career in fashion. Jaileen works multiple part-time jobs, all while serving as president of vo-tech's National Technical Honor Society.

Jacob Severn - A graduated senior at Saucon Valley HS, Jacob is a member of the cabinetmaking program at vo-tech. He has won the district competition for cabinet making and placed third in the state competition.

Kirsten Tarboro - Kirsten is a culinary arts student who plans to attend the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. She is heavily involved in dance and is a member of the Liberty HS Grenadier Marching Band.

Malcolm Taylor - In addition to being a Saucon Valley High School senior, Malcolm is a welding student at Northampton Community College, a volunteer firefighter, a member of Vo-Tech's cabinetmaking program, and a future criminal justice student.

Scott Vanwhy - Scott is a senior at Liberty and is enrolled in Vo-Tech's plumbing program. He is a volunteer firefighter at the Hanover Township Volunteer Fire Company #1 with more than 1,000 hours of community service.

Lauren Vargas - Lauren, a senior at Bethlehem Catholic, is also enrolled in Vo-Tech's Academy for Medical Science program. She's maintained a 3.5 GPA, all while participating in her school's color guard, Key Club, Fact Club, Spanish Club and choir. She also volunteers at St. Luke's University Health Network.

Hannah Weierbach - Hannah studies cosmetology at Vo-Tech and is a senior at Saucon Valley. She is an A student and has achieved high honor roll status since her Freshman year. Hannah hopes to continue her education at Northampton Area Community College and earn a nursing degree.
