The Emmaus girls team used two forfeit wins to reach the final day of the annual tournament
It is something telling of a team that can advance to Sunday, the final day of competition at Stellar's Catch a Rising Star tournament at Cedar Beach park. It is the main goal for each team in it.
It may not have been the hardest of ways, but the Emmaus girls basketball team was still on the court on Sunday at Cedar Beach.
Two forfeits helped the Hornets along the way, but first-year head coach Carl Scheitrum was still pleased with the way his team played to make it to the final day.
"We got some help along the way, but our goal is always to be playing on Sunday and we were able to do that this year," Scheitrum said.
"I'm happy for the girls, and they played well and were able to gain some valuable experience. It's still the summer and I want them to have fun."
The Hornets were credited with playing five games (two forfeit wins, one regular win, and two losses), but did so without one of their top players in Kiyae White, who was injured and may miss an extended period of time.
Without White, other girls were forced to step up and help out in scoring and defense.
One of those girls was Jenna Lessel, who scored a team-high 13 points in a 43-10 victory over the Stroudsburg JV team Saturday afternoon.
"Jenna played well for us all weekend," noted Scheitrum. "We have a couple of upperclassmen that stepped up for us, and that's always a good thing."
The Hornets were in a hole at the beginning of the tournament, losing a close one to Stroudsburg 30-24 to fall into the losers bracket.
But Saturday was a different story for Emmaus as it went 3-0. The day started with a forfeit win over Reading, followed by the win over Stroudsburg and a forfeit win over Quakertown.
The tournament ended for Emmaus with a loss to Dieruff early Sunday morning.
The Green Hornets will now look to improve and play off that competition with another big tournament this weekend at Sportsfest.
