Valley team goes 2-2
Lehigh Valley's appearance in the Carpenter Cup Softball Classic ended last Wednesday after losing for the second time in the double elimination tournament at FDR Park in Philadelphia.
Mercer County was the team that ultimately knocked out Lehigh Valley with a 7-4 victory.
"They were really solid, but we played our hardest," said Lehigh Valley and Whitehall High School catcher Mackenzie Guzy.
Lehigh Valley's first game in the tournament also resulted in a loss to Delaware South 14-2. However, consecutive wins, one over Jersey Shore 9-3, and one over Inter-AC 10-3, kept Lehigh Valley in the competition.
"I think we all came together as a team, and we all hit well and fielded well," Guzy said.
In the Jersey Shore game, Guzy made an important play, throwing out the runner at third base.
"Her lead was just really big, and I just threw it. I don't like when people try and take big leads," she said.
Lehigh Valley's game against Inter-AC started last Tuesday but had to be halted when thunderstorms rolled in. At the time, Lehigh Valley had a 4-0 lead after one inning. The game was completed the following day.
Lehigh Valley was coached by John Eyer of Emmaus.
"I liked all the coaches. They coached really well, and they got us to come together," said Guzy. "It was really great playing with new girls and getting to know them."
Because Guzy just completed her sophomore year of high school, she will have an opportunity to try out for the team again next year.
"Yeah, definitely. I want to play in college. I saw [the college coaches], but I didn't let them get to my head. I just focused on winning that game," Guzy said. "The experience was good to get noticed."
