At their June 15 meeting, Bethlehem Township Commissioners appointed John Carney, Pauline Schuyler, Martin W. Comer, Jeffrey Optiz and Nicholas Santiago to act as special fire police officers. Those are volunteer fire company members authorized by a municipality to help handle emergency situations.
They might be seen directing motorists around the scene of an accident or even helping to evacuate people after a hazardous road spill.
One appointee, Comer, an 82-year-old retired steelworker, can be seen at every commissioners' meeting and has volunteered much of his time to the township, from the special fire police force to the establishment of a monument to honor Township residents who served in the military.
At age 82, Martin Comer is still serving Bethlehem Township.
