Bath faces uphill climb in NORCO
The race to the NORCO Legion playoffs has Bath looking up at their counterparts as they head into the crucial final week of the regular season.
Entering Monday with a 5-6-1 record, Bath's lead in the division has now seen them slip into third place, temporarily pushing them out of the top-eight spots for the NORCO playoffs.
Head coach Alex Specht understands that a lot can change this week with six games on the slate and hopes that his team can prevail in making one last push.
"Obviously a lot of kids are going to get playing time because I'm unaware who we'll actually have at the games," Specht said. "So being a young team, we've had some growing pains. I've been seeing a lot of progress with them, so that has been a major upside. We really have to be gritty this week and focus on the mental aspect of the game. Making the plays you're suppose to make and putting the baseball in play at the plate."
With games against Wind Gap (2-10), Easton (8-2-1), Northampton (6-7), Freemansburg (4-9), Big Pocono (6-6-2) and Nazareth (4-7-1), as the last two games will both be played on Friday, Bath faces a difficult task with so many games in a short period of time.
"Obviously, the biggest thing you worry about with so many games in so little time, is pitching," Specht said. "We have had some setbacks this season with our top pitcher, Jimmy Downey, going down with injury in the first week. He is now starting to get back into the mix so hopefully that works out. I have a lot of guys pitching innings here and there just to get through some games, but overall, we have been doing well."
With Ryan Wescoe being the catalyst for Bath, Specht will need the consistent effort his center fielder has provided all season.
"When Ryan gets on base, we win games," said Specht. "His speed and patience at the plate have really done wonders for his overall gameplay. His defense is second to none. I worked with him during the Liberty season on tracking the baseball in the outfield and he has really done well with that process. "Elias Gross has also been a top player for the team, manning shortstop and I believe has the highest batting average on the team. Guys like Sammy Kraihanzel, Jared Burcin, and Mike Lehman have been some key contributors as well."
With that said, Bath needs to get results in the win column in order to keep their season going, as the playoffs get underway next week.
"With all of the division teams being neck and neck, this upcoming week is very important," he said. "We need those games. If we get 5 or 6 of those games, I feel we have a great shot coming out with the division."
