LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Whitehall Stellar hoops team gets win over Becahi

The Stellar Summer Basketball League went indoors Tuesday night as severe weather was forecasted for the Lehigh Valley, prompting the change.

While the thundershowers never materialized at least they hadn't by 8 p.m., the time Whitehall was slated to play Bethlehem Catholic the storm that actually emerged was the constant defensive pressure which came at the Hawks in waves, giving them fits on the offensive end the entire game.

That pressure, combined with some excellent ball movement that saw eight different players score, lifted Whitehall to a 60-45 win over Bethlehem Catholic on Coach Tracy Court.

The win raises Whitehall's record to 6-4, placing them in the middle of the pack in the Big School Division as the summer season winds down.

The win was impressive on a number of fronts, but the overriding factor was the unrelenting style of play at both ends.

"We were far more aggressive than they were," said junior varsity coach Corey Frantz who coaches the summer league team. "We talk about getting those 50-50 balls that either team can get on the court, and I think we got about eighty percent of them. That's a credit to these guys and how hard they play."

They also crashed the boards, grabbing a number of rebounds despite giving up considerable size underneath. Even Kasai Harrison, who stands 5-8, was getting some boards among their bigs.

"Some of those guys getting those rebounds and those 50-50 balls had no business getting them, but they did," said Frantz.

Jackson Buskirk was one of those players who was a disruptive force during his time on the court.

He had a number of steals, one of which led to a breakaway bucket. He also connected for a couple from the outside, including a three-pointer.

Another player who made a difference was Charles Hudson. Hudson got their fast break going with a number of outlet passes which led to some points in their transition game. He also played the passing lanes well, intercepting one pass that led to a dunk. His overall floor game helped Whitehall keep a bigger Becahi team from dominating in the paint.

Frantz said that Hudson can play multiple positions on the floor, and sometimes that means mixing it up inside with bigger players like he did against the Hawks.

"Tonight because we were undersized, he played inside a whole lot," said Frantz. "He did a great job."

Mikey Esquilin was another player who impacted the game, using his versatility to both drive for points as well as hit from the outside, while Kayden Walschburger also contributed some points from beyond the arc.

Whitehall has to finish among the top four teams to make the playoffs, and that means leapfrogging two teams who currently have a better record to get into that fourth spot.

Still, Frantz likes the way they're playing.

"I have been encouraged," he said. "They're playing together and they're playing better."
