LV Cup team named
Whitehall High School softball players, Rachel Spanitz, Julia Solderitch, Kay Solderitch, and Mackenzie Guzy were named to the 2015 Lehigh Valley Carpenter Cup Tournament Softball Team.
Lehigh Valley is a tournament team comprised of softball players from the East Penn Conference and the Colonial League who just completed their sophomore or junior year of high school. The tournament itself is sponsored by the Philadelphia Phillies, providing these players the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of college coaches.
Coached by John Eyer of Emmaus, try-outs were held last month.
Spanitz, Solderitch, and Solderitch will mainly play in the outfield; Guzy, the infield.
"We ran through drills, did some hitting. It was pretty straightforward," said Spanitz, regarding try-outs.
When Coach Eyer announced the roster, Spanitz's name was called towards the end of the middle.
"It was nerve-wracking, just waiting for my name to be called," she said. "I felt relief because I really wanted to make it."
Last week, the Lehigh Valley team played two scrimmages at Pates Park in which Julia Solderitch went 2 for 3.
"I played at short for one inning, and for the rest, I played in right field. I usually play there for summer ball, and I thought I did pretty well," Julia Solderitch said.
Kay Solderitch is Julia's sister.
"I'm kind of used to it because I've been playing with her my whole life," said Julia Solderitch.
The scrimmages gave the Lehigh Valley team a chance to practice in real game situations.
Spanitz said, "It felt new, like starting new. You learn to get to know their talents and see what everyone has."
The Carpenter Cup softball tournament is scheduled for June 22-25 at FDR Park in Philadelphia. Lehigh Valley will have played its first two games of the double-elimination tournament on Tuesday.
"I'm looking forward to playing, especially because there are going to be college coaches there, and doing better than last year," said Julia Solderitch
