Hellertown: Works employees to get raises

With the finalizing of a new contract, Hellertown Borough Public Works employees will soon begin receiving a 9 percent raise over three years.

The new agreement was announced at council's June 1 meeting. The pay increase will measure out at 3 percent in fiscal years 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Wages will be frozen for non-uniformed employees for the first one-and-a-half years of the contract.

According to borough Manager Cathy Hartranft, the borough will still cover the health care costs of retired borough employees; however, the borough will only cover up to $350 per month, up until Dec. 31, 2022, for those who retire in the future.

In addition, the cost of health insurance for current employees will also increase, from 4 percent to 5 percent in 2016 and 6 percent in 2017, Hartranft said.

Hartranft also noted the time current employees must work to be eligible for three weeks of paid vacation has been reduced.

In other business, Public Works Director Tom Henshaw said the borough pool should be ready for opening day June 13.
