Douvanis was unable to attend his Class of 1942 commencement because he enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve during World War II. Douvanis, a staff sergeant, landed in Normandy just days after the D-Day invasion and was involved in the Allied forces advance across France into Germany in 1944-1945.
