Red outlasts Gold in McDonald's Classic
It was the last scoring play of the McDonald's Lehigh Valley All-Star Classic and the first passing touchdown of Josiah Wright's football career.
Wright, a wide receiver for Liberty, threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Palisades' Devin Ramsden late in the fourth quarter of last week's contest to make things interesting, but ultimately have the Gold squad fall short of their bid to knock off the Red team.
When it was all said and done, the Red team (Lehigh, Carbon and Monroe Counties) took home a 29-27 over Wright and his Gold counterparts (Northampton County, Palisades and Phillipsburg) in a passionate affair at Nazareth's Andrew S. Leh Stadium.
Jumping out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter, the Red team earned touchdowns from three Northwestern players throughout the contest to cement their win in a hard-fought contest.
For Wright, his touchdown throw from the wide receiver position with 1:26 left in the game may have been too little, too late, but it was something that he'll remember for the rest of his life.
"We've been working on that play all week and it was really a designed play for the redzone, but we had to use it because we were running out of time," Wright said. "It was nice to have a perfect QBR. I was pretty nervous throwing that ball because I kept thinking to myself, 'please don't drop it.'"
A rough start by the Gold squad doomed their chances in the long run, as turnovers ultimately led to their early hole. Three first quarter turnovers by the Gold team ultimately put them behind when Cam Richardson (Northwestern) took a swing pass 14-yards from Travis Edmond (Southern Lehigh) for the opening score.
Chris Trumbauer, a Northwestern lineman, then picked off Nazareth QB Justin Albert and rumbled 25 yards for a pick-six to make it 12-0 after a failed PAT and two-point conversion.
However, even though it looked like the Red was going to run away with the win, the Gold squad battled back with a ground attack, starting off with a 12-yard TD run by Palisades' running back Christian Gretzinger in the second quarter. Easton's Dalvyn Reynolds then busted up the middle on a handoff, going 43-yards for the score with 7:02 in the first half, giving the Gold squad a 13-12 lead.
A 20-yard field goal by Stroudsburg's Nico Ruiz put the Red team ahead 15-13 heading into halftime before the Gold team's fourth and final turnover on the night proved to be their most damaging when Taylor Breininger (Northwestern) intercepted a pass and returned it 58-yards for a TD with 3:41 left in the third quarter to put the Red team ahead 22-13.
Gretzinger (eight carries, 85-yards) scored his second TD of the night for the Gold with a 45-yard TD to open the fourth quarter and pull the team within 22-20, but the Red team could never get over the hump.
Chris Marks (Dieruff) would sneak in a score from a yard out with just under three minutes left to play to give the Red another nine-point, cushion, 29-20, before Wright's eventual TD pass.
"You always want to win, but just meeting new people from different areas was a great experience," Wright said.
And that meant having to play with city rivals from Freedom.
Pates lineman John Deely had fun playing with Liberty players he battled against for four-years.
"I'll tell you what, I actually love the Liberty guys, they're cool dudes," Deely said. "We always joked around and said 'BASD proud' so I had a great time with them."
