LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Liberty leads local schools

The Cedar Beach summer league has been in full swing throughout this month and Liberty is leading the pack for Bethlehem area schools in the Big School Standings in the boys' division.

Fresh off a 57-56 win over Whitehall last week, head coach Chad Landis has his team sitting at 6-4 entering this week.

Landis knows that summer league is exactly that, a summer league, but understands the benefits that come from playing organized basketball at this point of the year.

"It's nice to get out and see the kids play and you want to see different lineups and groups and see how they play together," Landis said. "But the summer is the summer and we realize that."

With a good core of players returning this year for the Hurricanes, Landis does value the aspect of getting more reps on the Cedar Beach asphalt.

"Having all the guys play together and gel and seeing who's doing what well at this point," Landis said. "It gives kids the chance to see what they need to work on and get better."

Bethlehem Catholic (2-6) has struggled for the most part of this summer but picked up a big win over Central Catholic last week following a 48-41 victory.

With Parkland (6-2) and Central (4-4) touted as the teams with the most talent this year, registering a win over the Vikings was a good sign for the Hawks.

Freedom (3-5) is working through their summer as well, as they'll look to make a playoff push starting this week with games against Central Catholic and Liberty on Tuesday and Thursday night respectively.

Becahi takes on Whitehall and Quakertown this week, while Liberty's lone contest is Thursday's game against the rival Patriots.
