'Grimm!' takeaway at MSMT

Doppelskope Theatre Company premieres its latest children's show, "Grimm!," at Muhlenberg Summer Music Theatre (MSMT), where it continues through July 25, Studio Theatre, Trexler Pavilion for Theatre And Dance, Muhlenberg College, 2400 Chew St., Allentown.

Doppelskope, the production company behind last year's successful "Gruff!" at MSMT, has created another interactive show in "Grimm!," combining puppetry, music and comedy to teach and entertain.

Doppelskope was founded by friends and "Gruff!" co-writers Ora Fruchter and Christopher Scheer, and "Gruff!" composer Toby Singer.

The mission of Doppelskope is to "respect the intelligence of children and the whimsy of adults," says Scheer.

"We like to do shows where everyone is part of the experience. Our shows have no fourth wall. The performers are always aware of the audience. There is a lot of call and response.

"Children want to interact, not just sit back and watch politely. We try to engage the audience in the way that they would like to interact with the world," Scheer says.

"Grimm!" explores several traditional fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. Hansel & Gretel, Snow White and Rumpelstiltskin are introduced as main character Charlotte journeys through the fairytale world.

The fairy tale characters are played by puppets designed and made by Doppelskope.

"Grimm! is a really fun show," says Fruchter. "It's about awakening our imaginations, but also about how screens and devices are changing our relationships.

"It's about setting boundaries. We hope the show can start conversations among families regarding their own screen boundaries," Fruchter says.

"Grimm!" was designed to appeal to all ages. "We are expecting the grown-ups to have a really great time, too," says Fruchter.

A meet and greet with the actors and puppets and storytelling and craft workshops are included with admission.
