Summer hoops is now back to full strength
Early on in the summer, the boys basketball landscape looks nothing like what it will in mid-July, leading up to the winter season. With the Stellar and Sportsfest tournaments, and summer league playoffs, games heat up and teams usually will have their entire teams, including the head coaches.
During the regular season summer league games, players are involved in other things like vacations or AAU games.
Many expected Parkland to roll through summer league games, but that hasn't been the case. A lot of that has to do with a starting five that hasn't been playing together much at all so far.
Kyle Stout, Jack Dreisbach and Sam Iorio were busy winning a state championship in volleyball, and Devante Cross, Kenny Yeboah, and Noel Brouse have been working out at football camps across the east coast.
But last Tuesday night (June 9) at Cedar Beach, all except for Stout (Parkland graduation) were in the game.
That helped for a 62-28 win against Southern Lehigh, in which the Trojans never trailed and led by as much as 36 in the second half.
"It felt kind of weird because it was my first game after playing volleyball for three months," Dreisbach said. "I haven't played with these guys in a while it seems like, but since we've been together for years it's just like riding a bike. It's comfortable."
Dreisbach and Iorio (seven points, six rebounds) pointed out that they had to get back to shooting the ball, compared to spiking it. But the two did just fine, combining for 22 points, 15 of which came from Dreisbach the leading scorer of the game. Cross kept right with his classmate, also tallying 15 points on the night.
"It feels great to get everybody back," said Dreisbach. "Our whole team enjoys playing together. Will Baar, Justin Lessel and Michael Zeky have done a good job playing while we were gone. It was weird not being able to be in there."
Yeboah netted eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Brouse had six points and four rebounds. Baar contributed four points.
