Several years ago an endowment fund was established at Union Lutheran Church, Schnecksville, to support the efforts of volunteers to assist people affected by natural disasters to return to normal lifestyles.
Union Lutheran groups have traveled to Puerto Rico and at least 11 different states to repair or rebuild houses damaged by various disasters, such as floods and tropical storms.
In May, the ULC group of nine volunteers traveled to Long Branch, N.J., where they stayed at a church while working on houses in the area.
They installed flooring, decks, bath tub enclosures, storm doors, railings, 2-inch by 4-inch lumber and framing for a handicap lift.
Pastor Dennis Moore commented on the volunteers' skillful efforts.
"The groups from ULC work, and I mean work," Moore said. "There's not too many aspects of home building and repair these volunteers haven't done. They raise the banner of commitment and compassion high."
