Soccer party begins June 6

ArtsQuest has decided to host another Lehigh Valley SoccerFest and Viewing Party this summer, but this time for the Women's World Cup. According to ArtQuest's Curt Mosel, this is due in part to the success of last year's events surrounding the Men's World Cup.

"Last year's event was very successful which definitely helped us consider hosting again this year," Mosel said. "In discussing with youth soccer programs and soccer related businesses and our partners for 2014, all of them encouraged us to host again because of the past success and uniqueness of our event and campus."

While last summer's theme focused on the tournament being international, encompassing more than just the U.S. men's team, this summer will focus on the empowerment of girls.

"Young girls are a huge part of the fan base," Mosel said. "We're adapting to what we feel is the best approach to showcasing the event."

The women's national team has been very successful in the past two decades and is currently ranked number two in the world, he added.

One way in which Arts Quest is adapting the events to the theme is by involving their sponsors. A new activity this year will include a "selfie scavenger hunt." Each sponsor will create a backdrop for their location, participants will take a selfie with the backdrop and share it on social media with their hashtag and sponsor name. The prize for this contest will be a MusikFest VIP package.

"Great for the brand and great for the patrons who are coming out to enjoy the event," Mosel said.

In addition to the scavenger hunt, the event will feature different interactive activities that girls might see at their own soccer tournaments, including face painting and crafts. ArtsQuest will also be bringing in performers that tie into the overall theme.

"We're really trying to recruit and have bands that have female persons in them, whether it be the lead singer or the whole band," Mosel said. "Again, we're really trying to tie that into the whole message."

ArtsQuest officials are predicting a turnout similar to what was seen at the U.S. games last summer.

"We think there should be similar crowds to some of the bigger events. The fact that the U.S. women when they play a home match at the United States . . . will typically outdraw the men at the game. It's hard to tell if that will translate to our viewing party, but it could. We're expecting anywhere from 4,000 to 7,000 people," Mosel said.

The Women's World Cup will begin June 6 and the final games will take place July 5. The U.S. Women's team will have its first match June 8. Arts Quest events will open at 4 p.m. that day and the game will start at 7:30 p.m.
