Fullerton also begins 1-1
With the lights now shining above Henry Glasser Field, it's a sure sign that the Fullerton Legion baseball season is underway.
The Ramblers have begun the 2015 season and are currently 1-1, which puts them in a second-place logjam in the Lehigh Valley Legion Baseball League. They've played three games to date, but their game against Northern Valley was suspended due to darkness and will be picked up in the eighth inning knotted at 1-1.
Fullerton finished 10-8 last year and made the playoffs before they were ousted by North Parkland.
This year General Manager Jim Hein said the goal remains the same, and that things "are going good so far."
Fullerton features a lot of talent, and no where is that more prevalent than on the mound. They have quality arms, with a good mix of both rightys and leftys, to throw at the opposing team. They also have good depth, and that will come in handy as games pile up due to early cancellations.
The Ramblers pitching staff includes, Alex Bruneio, Jeff Charles, Jacob Fink, Zach Gilbert, Matt Melosky, Nathan Pontician and Dakota Schiffer.
That rotation is also very experienced as Schiffer, Charles, Melosky, Bruneio and Fink all saw action last year.
Hein is quick to stress that in a league that uses wooden bats, pitching and defense are vital elements for success.
"They're very important parts, that's for sure," he said. "That's what it comes down to, pitching and defense.
As far as the defense, the Ramblers will have a solid group behind whatever pitcher gets the ball that night. The infielders include Melosky (1st), R.J. Figueroa (2nd), A.J. Figueroa (2nd), Charles (SS), Jose Berrios (3rd), Tyler Correll, (SS, 2nd), David Gonzalez (3rd, 2nd) Jacob Lisicky (3rd, C), Gilbert (1st) and Pontician (2nd).
Handling the catching chores will be Nicholas Delp, with Lisoicky also seeing some time behind the plate.
In the outfield Fullerton will feature Nick Nejad, Dalton Buskirk, Fink, George Hana and Jeison Peralta.
Fullerton also boasts a strong line-up with three of their four leading hitters returning from last year's squad.
In their 6-0 win against West Allentown, the Ramblers pounded out nine hits. Hein said that A.J. Figueroa had a big day at the plate, going 2-2 with two RBIs, while Charles also had a good game, finishing 2-2, including a triple. He also knocked in two runs.
Melosky and Fink combined for the shutout, scattering just five hits over seven innings.
Hein said that A.J. Figueroa's glove was also on fire that game as he made some dazzling plays in the field at second, helping to preserve the shutout.
With a strong pitching staff intact, and a roster full of experienced players, Hein believes they have all the ingredients for another deep postseason run.
"We have a pretty good team, and we should be there at the end if everybody's firing on all cylinders," said Hein.
