Fountain Hill remembers

A Memorial Day ceremony was sponsored by the American Legion and held at the Fountain Hill flagpole May 22. Fountain Hill ES fifth grade students participated by writing essays on patriotism or what a hero is to them. The best essays were read during the ceremony. Manny Lopez, Tavia Flecksteiner and Matthew Lance read their essays and each received a $50 savings bonds from the Fountain Hill American Legion. Fountain Hill historian Carl Solecki spoke about the city's oldest veteran, 93-year-old Bill Fritz. After a floral tribute by the Fountain Hill police and a gun salute from Honor Guard 576, the Broughal MS band performed patriotic tunes and concluded the ceremony with the playing of "Taps."
