Despite delays, street sweeping in Coplay is complete
At Coplay's workshop meeting on June 2, Council President Louis Bodish reported on the delays the borough encountered getting local streets swept.
The annual sweep normally takes a couple of days but was extended this year when the borough decided to use a different contractor.
"This year we asked North Catasauqua to help us out," Bodish said. "They would supply the equipment and the manpower at a lower rate than our regular contractor."
A series of snafus caused delays, and the borough ultimately finished the job with Martin's Power Sweeping Inc., Nazareth.
"The North Catasauqua machine was too small for the size of the job. We had a lot of debris from the harsh winter," Bodish said. "We needed something more powerful to get everything picked up."
David Buskaritz reported that the fire department will distribute fundraising letters this week. This effort is the main fundraising event for volunteer firefighters.
Borough Secretary Sandra Gyecsek provided council with a list of items for the upcoming regular meeting.
Council will vote on an ordinance that will allow online bill payments through First Northern Bank & Trust. The borough has been working closely with the bank to complete the paperwork to allow a smooth transition to online banking. According to Gyecsek, this should be the last documents needed by the bank.
Changes to the civil service commission and the civil service rules are necessary to bring the borough's ordinances in line with recent changes. Solicitor James Preston prepared the necessary changes, and they are advertised.
Councilman Joseph Groller asked council to vote on the purchase of a bucket truck for the streets department. The vehicle was not in the budget, but Groller is asking that necessary funding be deducted from the streets equipment fund to finalize the purchase.
Public works Director Paul Boyle reported on the status of the Chestnut Street Public Square project. Lowe's is contributing some landscaping material that Boyle indicated would be in place toward the end of June. Borough employees are preparing the site.
Councilman Stephen Burker reported that Reph's Auto Repair Shop on Second Street received a "Best of" award from Lehigh Valley Style magazine. The magazine's readers vote for their favorites based on nominations submitted by subscribers.
