Bethlehem hostingWorld Cup festivals this month
The Lehigh Valley SoccerFest & Viewing Party, which became an area hot-spot during the 2014 FIFA World Cup last summer, is returning to SteelStacks next week, with the anticipation of massive crowds expected to fill the former Bethlehem Steel plant as they watch the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team.
The festival will feature all of the U.S.A.'s matches displayed on a giant outdoor screen on the SteelStacks campus, with action kicking off on June 8 at 4 p.m. with live music, food and soccer-related activities. The U.S.A. opens the tournament with their first game against Australia at 7:30 p.m. later that night.
"The U.S. Women's National Team features some of the top female soccer players in the world and is currently ranked No. 2 globally by FIFA," says ArtsQuest Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Partnerships Curt Mosel. "These women are not only incredible athletes, they're also tremendous role models for girls and young soccer players. We're looking forward to presenting a variety of programming and presentations that focus on the theme of empowering young girls to dream big and pursue their goals no matter what they may be."
This year's festival will broadcast all three of the U.S.A.'s World Cup group play matches, as they also take on Sweden on June 12 at 8 p.m. and Nigeria on June 16 at 8 p.m. Other matches taking place the day the U.S.A. plays will be televised as well.
Should the U.S.A. advance to the Round of 16 and further along in the knockout stages, the festival will continue to host viewing parties on the day the national team plays.
This year's festival will also feature DJs before and after the U.S.A.'s matches, as well as live music by bands such as indie rockers Summer Scouts.
The SoccerFest will also feature soccer-related programs and activities including an interactive experience by the Philadelphia Union, family activities like soccer tennis and arts & crafts, vendors offering official U.S. Soccer merchandise and a presentation by Daniel Paul Morrison, the leading historian on the Bethlehem Steel F.C., the soccer powerhouse that was based at Bethlehem Steel and won five National Challenge Cups from 1915-26.
The 2014 FIFA World Cup SoccerFest brought in more than 50,000 people to the SteelStacks campus and garnered national media coverage from the likes of ESPN and USA Today.
In addition to the events, Good Shepherd Pediatrics is partnering with Lehigh Valley United to provide children with disabilities an opportunity to learn the sport of soccer when they host two free Good Shepherd Pediatrics Soccer Clinics at the Lehigh Valley SoccerFest on June 16 at 5 and 6 p.m.
"Good Shepherd Pediatrics is thrilled to once again partner with LVU to bring a fun, free and engaging soccer experience to children with disabilities," says Jodie Moulton, Director, Outpatient Pediatrics, at Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network. "It is a unique opportunity for children to gain enthusiasm for the sport as well as an interest in fitness and recreation."
The clinics for ages 5-12 are open to the first 50 registrants at www.lvsoccerfest.com. You can also visit the web site to check out more information on schedule events throughout the tournament.
