Trojans top Easton for D-11 three-peat

In a matter of a half inning, Parkland watched its 3-0 lead disappear into a tie game after six innings.

But when Parkland senior Jeff Strisovsky walked up to the plate in the bottom half of the seventh, he didn't waste any time in giving the Trojans back that lead in the biggest game of the season.

After Andrew Roth's double began the seventh, Strisovsky came up to bat two batters later with one out and Roth still in scoring position. When he got a curveball, a pitch he's not too fond of, Strisovsky lined it into left-center field to bring home Roth and send the No. 1 seeded Trojans to a 4-3 victory over No. 3 Easton on Tuesday night at Allentown's Coca-Cola Park.

"I got a curveball, and to be honest I'm not a curveball hitter," Strisovsky said. "I just sat back, waited, and drove it into the outfield.

"I was a little anxious. I told myself before that at-bat to calm down, have fun, stay loose, and do the best I could."

The win secured the Trojans' third straight district crown and their fifth since 2003.

"Three in a row," said Parkland head coach Tony Galucy. "I never would've imagined we were going to do that. That's nine straight district wins. That's really tough to do, especially when everybody is gunning for you. It's not easy."

The Trojans were in control through five innings of play. The only Easton scoring threat came in the top of the first when the Red Rovers had the bases loaded with one out. A Parkland 4-6-3 double play, however, ended that scoring threat without any damage.

Starter Connor Higgins, after allowing a hit and two walks in the first, allowed two hits the next four innings. The sixth inning was a different story.

After Austin Veres and Corey Webb led off with back-to-back singles, Trey Durrah launched a triple in the left center field gap to score both Red Rovers, making in a 3-2 Trojan lead. Durrah would come around to score on a wild pitch moments later to tie the contest, 3-3.

"I thought it was just like going back to a 0-0 game like the beginning of the game," said Higgins, who struck out six Easton batters. "I wanted to try to give us some motivation to go back in the bottom of the seventh and get the sticks going."

"We've had adversity before," Galucy said. "We were trailing in both games in districts. We were losing to Northampton 1-0. We were losing to Pocono Mountain East 1-0."

While the lead disappeared within a matter of minutes, Higgins and the Trojans never lost their poise. In fact, Higgins responded with a 1-2-3 seventh inning, including a strikeout of leadoff batter Jayson Mitch to sit down the Red Rovers.

"There was no way they were taking me out," Higgins said. "I just wanted to stay in there and help my team win any way that I could."

"Connor did the job and went out in the seventh and had a real strong inning," Galucy said. "That was big to stop the momentum there."

The Trojans had runners on first and second in the first, and Tyler Bruno's RBI-double scored Justin Afflerbach to begin the scoring. Evan McAndrew's sacrifice fly in the next at-bat quickly made it a 2-0 game for the Trojans.

Parkland increased its lead to 3-0 in the fourth on Dan Zaccaro's RBI-single to right field, but Galucy knew that lead wouldn't be safe.

"We knew Easton was going to put together some runs," Galucy said. "They're tough kids over there, so you know they're not going to go lying down."
