Girls lax falls short of district title
It was the matchup they wanted since an early-season loss in April, but the outcome was the same.
Undefeated Southern Lehigh once again got the better of Parkland, this time in the District 11 final. The Spartans defeated the Trojans 9-7 last Thursday at Emmaus High School.
"They are a well-coached team," said first year head coach Dawn Cipolla. "They have a lot of speed. Their goalie and defense played great."
Ana Emrick's second goal of the night tied the game at seven with 4:20 to go, it was the sixth tie of the evening. But just over two minutes later, Baleigh Bradley was fouled in front of the cage and went low to skip the game-winner past Brie Barraco on a free position shot.
"After Ana scored I felt we were going to come through with the win," said Cipolla. "I thought we had the momentum, now we are going to win it. Then they got the ball and scored with a minute to go. They possessed the ball at the end and we tried to force them to make a mistake and come up with ball but they were able to score with seconds left in game."
Elise Ashford sealed the win with 11 seconds left after a Trojans turnover.
The two teams have split district championships the last three years with Parkland winning last year and the Spartans in 2013.
Southern Lehigh trailed 2-0 early, but consistently scored the tying goal from then on. Galli's goal with 3:06 left in the first half gave the Trojans a one-goal lead heading into halftime.
But the Southern Lehigh defense and goalie Libby Dex limited the Trojans high-octane offense. Seniors Sophie Castillo and Mackenzie Galli each had only one goal on the night, but these two will be remembered for a long time for their contributions to the Parkland program.
"Sophie and Mackenzie brought poise, determination, great work ethics, the meaning of team and family to our team," said Cipolla. "It is going to be hard to replace them. It was an honor for me to coach them their senior year. I have known both girls since fifth grade. Watching them grow as individuals, lacrosse players and young women will be memories I will cherish. They will be truly missed. I can't wait to watch them on TV playing for their college teams."
