Parkland volleyball head coahc Scott Trumbauer didn't stress sweeping every team on his team's East Penn Conference schedule. He just took his team into every match hoping to come out with a win.

When the Trojans beat Emmaus last week 25-19, 25-14, 25-20 in the East Penn Conference title match, it completed a perfect EPC season in which Parkland did not lose a game in any match.

"That was never on my mind to be honest with you," Trumbauer said. "It's really nice to be able to say that now, especially looking back on it.

"But, I always tell the kids, 'it's the matches we play, not necessarily the sets.' So, winning them 3-0 is fantastic. It's a great accomplishment. When it comes down to it though, I want to get that three, get the three and get that "W" that really counts towards the goal. When you look at records, no one ever talks about how many games you win. That doesn't matter; it's all about the end result. Did you get the three games to get the W?"

Emmaus gave Parkland a run for its money in the opening game of last week's title match, played at Liberty High School.

After the Trojans took a quick 4-1 lead, the Hornets made things interesting throughout the first game. The two rivals entertained the crowd with eight ties and nine lead changes. Emmaus taking six of those lead changes themselves. However, it was the last of three for the Trojans that mattered most. After Emmaus knotted it up at 17-17, the Trojans took advantage of several Hornet miscues and Jake Heyer ended things with a soft kill that ended up dropping between two Hornets to end the opening game.

It was expected that Emmaus would play tough with Parkland at first, according to Trumbauer.

"Every time we play Emmaus, they're always emotional," Trumbauer said. "They always leave everything out on the court. And, we needed to kind of match that to make sure we play down at all. Early on in games like this, that tends to happen. It's just a natural thing for kids to do in big games."

All-Conference player Andrew Hillman provided the spark for the Trojans in the second game.

After the Hornets held the lead early, Hillman stepped up to serve and quickly tied the game with the first of his five aces on the day. Hillman served three aces before the Hornets ended the run with a kill to force a side out.

Still, the Trojans carried off the momentum and Kyle Stout and Sean Lewis provided some firepower to help the locals secure the second game with ease.

"Andrew Hillman's jump serve is brutal," Emmaus coach Ken Dunkle said. "That's a tough one for anyone to get. We definitely lost a lot of momentum in the second set."

Hillman didn't want to take all the credit..

"I think it's just tough the fact that I'm a lefty," said Hillman, who finished with four kills, 18 assists, five aces and two blocks. "It's a little bit of a different look.

"Honestly, anyone can get caught with anybody's serves. It just happened that it was my serve tonight."

While it was Hillman's serve and the Trojans' attack in the second game, it was a combination of a superb attack on the Trojans' part and aplenty of miscues by the Hornets in the final set that secured a complete sweep for the No. 2 ranked team in the state of Pennsylvania in Class AAAA.

There were six ties and seven lead changes in the clinching game.

After the last deadlock at 10-10, the Trojans' Jake Heyer, Hillman, Stout and Jack Dreisbach led the attack on the front line. The Trojans' fearsome foursome made it impossible for the Hornets to accomplish anything as they provided kills on offense and blocks on the defensive end.

While his serve started the momentum swing for the Trojans in the second, it was a kill on Hillman's part that helped Parkland make it back-to-back championships.

"We got the last Lehigh Valley Conference Championship," said Trumbauer. "And, now, we got the first EPC one. That's great. I said to the kids, and my brother actually beforehand, when I saw that trophy among the fall sports trophies at school all I could think about was that I wanted to get one of those.

"They're huge. It's a cool trophy. I said to the guys, 'We got to earn one of those because it would look cool to have one of those in our hands. And, get in our trophy case.'"
