Parkview Pool in Hokendauqua will open for the summer.
The extensive repairs to the pool are now slated to take place after the pool is closed for the season in mid-August.
Children and adults were relieved after learning from Whitehall Township Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. at the board of commissioners' May 11 meeting that the pool will open, along with the other two pools, Cementon and Jefferson, on Saturday, June 20.
At the May 4 commissioners workshop meeting, Hozza reported the past winter took its toll, with the formation of ice in the pool. Parkview Pool experienced damaged tiles, grouting and expansion of joints.
Early repair estimates set the cost at $115,000, with additional cost projections from other contractors expected.
Hozza's announcement is welcome news for the Whitehall Waves swim program, which practices at the Hokendauqua Pool.
Whitehall resident Tracy Yadush said the township needs to set up a fund that would pay for such emergency projects at the pools.
"We owe it to the residents," she said. "We had 55 years to put money aside."
Also, Hozza said there is a timetable in place for the restoration of the three pools. At present, work is taking place at the Cementon Pool.
