On a 4 by 4 foot stage, "Ten Tiny Dances" will be presented at 8 p.m. May 23 at Touchstone Theater, 321 E. Fourth St., Bethlehem.
"Ten Tiny Dances" is produced by Sarah Carlson-Dancelink.
Choreographer Sarah Carlson has been producing the series in the Lehigh Valley since 2009. Carlson was inspired by Mike Barber, an artist based in Portland, Ore., who began using the format of a tiny stage. It is an experiment of movement in a space of limited dimension.
The performance will reveal how the intensity of confined movement can be quite entertaining by using breath and control with imagination and concentration, exercising each step with significant expression. Sometimes less is more.
Carlson explains, "I was intrigued by creating dance for such a tiny stage. Touchstone Theater inspired me because it is such an intimate theater but not big enough to perform dance except for on the tiny stage."
The works were created one month before the show by local choreographers, including Angeline Wolf, who's presenting three of Bach's "Goldberg Variations."
"The challenge of taking something that is very expansive to a minimal space starts with flexibility," says Wolf.
Dawn Blanco, also a presenting choreographer, says, "My original work was for six dancers but with the tiny stage I am using two dancers. You can't be afraid to make big changes and take risks to create something new and interesting."
Lehigh Valley artists also featured in this performance are Samantha Burns, Julissa Dejesus, James Du Chateau, Samantha Jones, Elizabeth Shemory, Marla Wolfinger, and Carlson.
