Lady Trojans win EPC semi by mercy rule

"They just come out and play the game."

That's how Parkland softball head coach Barry Search describes his team that picked up a 10-0 win over Easton in the East Penn Conference semifinals Tuesday to advance to the conference championship against Liberty Thursday afternoon at Patriot's Park in Allentown.

Aubree Fritzinger threw five shutout innings, giving up just one hit and striking out four to get the win for the Lady Trojans. Meanwhile, Parkland pounded two Easton pitchers for 10 hits and took advantage of some fielding lapses along the way.

Abby Fritzinger drew a one-out walk in the first inning and then circled the bases on three passed balls by Easton catcher Amanda Dehart. Emma Varrato then singled and scored on the first of two triples from Shauna Frank, who would later score on a fielding error by shortstop Hannah Wieller to give Parkland a quick 3-0 lead.

Frank's second triple of the day scored Varrato, who had singled to lead off the third and Frank was able to come home on a bad throw from right fielder Maria Bonfanti. In the fourth, Sidney Stibitz singled to lead-off the inning and pinch-runner Jessica Kutteroff stole both second and third and came home when the throw to third from Dehart sailed down the third base line. Varrato picked up her third hit of the day, a single to drive in Taylor Knappenberger, who had doubled, stretching the Parkland lead to 7-0 after four innings.

The 10-run rule would come into play in the fifth when a walk and a base-hit put runners on first and second for pinch-hitter Alyssa Oakley, who tripled to make it 9-0 and then scored on a base-hit from Knappenberger.

While Frank's two triples were key for Parkland, she saw the win as just more of the same, where the whole team contributed to the final outcome.

"It was a team effort, really," said Frank. "If one person gets out, the other picks them right up. We keep the oars in the water and it was a team effort where we all worked well together.

"The coaches really emphasize working together as a team. It's not one person. It's not three people. It's not the infield. It's not the outfield. It's the team together."

All the while, Fritzinger was breezing on the mound, with the only blip coming in the third inning when she gave up a lead-off single, followed by a sacrifice bunt. Fritzinger then threw a wild pitch to put a runner on third, but got the final two outs of the inning to end the threat. The next inning, the sophomore hurler struck out the side.

"She's just Aubrey," said Search. "She comes here and she does her thing and it's just great to see."

Search believes that this year's team may not be very big on showing a lot of emotion, but it is big on policing itself and helping each other to be better players. That dedication has made this season somewhat easy for Search as a coach.

"This is their team, it's not mine," said Search. "I'm just here as the custodian. It's great to see them come out and do the things that they do. It's a team that's not real emotional. They just come out and play the game."

Frank is enjoying the season and has seen her teammates rally around each other and believes that the attention that they give to detail is part of what is making the team so good.

"The selfless things, the little things," said Frank. "Like Jess [Kutteroff's] baserunning. She's been great. And getting bunts down, it's really important to do the little things well."
