LHS earns a district berth
Liberty's boys' lacrosse team is making their first appearance in the District 11 3A postseason this week and the Hurricanes couldn't be more excited about it.
Despite coming in as the eighth-seed and taking on top-seeded Easton at 4 p.m. Thursday, the Hurricanes enter with a sense of hope on the opening day of the district tournament.
"I think the kids are looking forward to playing a district game," said head coach Joe Sexton. "It's a new game on Thursday and the kids are excited about it."
Liberty got its first dose of postseason action last week in the East Penn Conference semifinals, losing to Easton 17-3. It was their second thumping at the hands of the Rovers and one that Sexton admitted, was "difficult to get our kids up" for the game, knowing Easton's talent level beforehand.
"We knew Easton was going to be tough and we're dealing with some injuries too, which doesn't help," Sexton said. "I think our guys can look at this week as a clean slate and that kind of breathes new life into us."
Easton (16-2) won the East Penn Conference championship Monday night over Parkland 8-6 to capture the top-seed in the district playoffs, which Sexton originally believed he would have had his team playing Southern Lehigh on Thursday.
Liberty (6-12) has sneaked into the postseason, thanks to their 5-5 EPC mark, which guarantees teams a shot at the playoffs because of their .500 mark in the league.
The 'Canes are hoping to have Tom Murphy, their leading scorer on the season with 25 goals, ready for action on Thursday, as he's one of several players dealing with injuries this week.
Sexton doesn't know the availability of his wounded warriors yet, but hopes his team can accomplish one of the goals he set forth for them earlier this season.
"One thing I wanted to do this year was to have one major upset," he said. "We don't have that yet and this would be a good time to check that off."
