Softball will make D-11 playoffs
Last Friday proved to be prosperous for the Whitehall softball team as well, joining their campus brethren in a trip to the postseason after a come-from-behind win.
Their entree also came at the hands of division rival Northampton, a team that had beaten them 3-2 earlier this season in a rain-shortened game. Since that second-week loss to the Kids, the Zephs have gone 11-3, and are also in the mix for a league playoff spot as well.
Not bad considering they dug themselves an early hole. Now they'll have to see whether they'll be one of the wildcards to make the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference playoffs.
The 6-2 win over the Kids also showcased the talent of starting pitcher Kay Solderitch. Solderitch fanned 15 while allowing just four hits to notch her sixth win of the season.
The southpaw followed that impressive outing with another superb performance, shutting out Emmaus on just two hits through five innings of work en route to a 13-0 win over their division rivals.
In the game against the Kids, Whitehall struck first by scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Rachel Spanitz got the ball rolling with a bloop single. She advanced to second after the ball got past the catcher following Karly Klein's strikeout. Gabrielle Molitoris followed with an infield single, bringing up Jill Rex who walked to load the bases. Kay Solderitch hit into a fielder's choice, with the Kids recording the out at home. Cara Bonshak was next in the box, and the catcher worked a walk, giving the Zephs the 1-0 lead.
However, the Kids answered right back in the top of the sixth. They were able to get two runners on via a walk and an error. But the big blow was delivered by Maura Moser whose hit down the right field line scored a run. Their second run came on a passed ball.
The Zephs quickly shook off those turn of events in their half of the inning. Abigail Nguyen led things off with a walk. Mackenzie Guzy then singled, bringing up Spanitz who advanced the runners with a sacrifice.
That put Klein at the plate. Klein's previous plate appearances ended in strikeouts, and the senior was ready to reverse her fortunes. She hit a grounder to short, resulting in an infield hit that scored Nguyen with the tying run.
That hit opened the floodgates as they scored four more runs, the big blow coming off the bat of Kay Solderitch whose single drove in two.
Klein said it was important to deliver in that situation.
"I struck out two times, so I was really trying to go up there the third time and at least do something, make contact, make them make an error, put in play somewhere," said Klein. "That's all I had to do, and we just went from there."
Klein said it's important to keep a positive mindset in those situations, focusing on just making good contact with runners on base.
In both innings they scored, the Zephs got their first batter aboard, setting the wheels in motion.
"This team feeds when the first batter of the inning gets on base," said head coach Alexis Berg-Townsend. "The girls feed off that and gain more confidence, and I think that just carries as you went through the line-up, saying 'Hey, if that person got on, I have to do my job.'"
Kay Solderitch had to battle throughout the game, working her way out of jams consistently against the Kids. Northampton was finally able to capitalize in the sixth after a two-out rally.
"One thing about Kay, she knows how to mentally handle things," said Berg-Townsend. "She's a big-time, big-game type of pitcher. When she's feeing it, it's hard to break her off of it, and she was feeling it the entire game.
"There's nobody better able to get mentally through something, and she's capable doing so even as a sophomore."
With their postseason appearance firmly in hand, Klein was grateful they would have the chance to play for a district title.
"It's an extremely great feeling as a senior," said Klein. "I was wondering if we would get in the last three games, and now we finally got it. It's good to finally get the monkey off our back."
For Berg-Townsend, the ability to clinch a spot early was critical since they were facing all division opponents down the stretch, each with a winning record except Nazareth.
"We knew coming into this week, we had Nazareth, Northampton, Emmaus and Parkland, and it doesn't get any more difficult than those last four games," said Berg-Townsend. "So for them to go out [after our] rough outing on Monday against Nazareth, and I told them there's going to be a difference between them not making districts and being a good team, and they showed they could be a good team."
Berg-Townsend said that the win takes the pressure off, allowing them to relax heading into the last two games.
"I think you're going to see a much looser team come Friday and Monday," said Berg-Townsend.
They still had hopes of making the league playoffs heading into their final game, but Tuesday's 8-3 loss to Parkland on senior day eliminated them from the wildcard pool.
