Repairs could delay pool opening
Whitehall Township Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. disclosed at the township board of commissioners meeting on Monday that Parkview Pool, Hokendauqua, requires emergency repairs before it opens for the summer.
Reporting that tile at the pool is falling off, Hozza said grouting and expansion joints will have to be repaired and the entire pool will need to be hydroblasted.
The repair work could cost as much as $115,230.
According to Hozza, the devastating winter took its toll on the popular pool, which hosts the annual Wacky Water Games, at which the lifeguards from the township's three pools compete. Games for children and adults are also held during the event.
Asked by The Press whether Parkview Pool will be able to open for the summer or remain closed for extensive repairs, Hozza said, "It is too early to say."
One company that is experienced with performing pool restoration work provided the $115,230 quote in refurbishing the pool. Hozza said another two companies will likely be at the pool this week to conduct similar inspections and provide cost estimates.
The commissioners may have more information by Monday's commissioners meeting in order to make a decision on what type of work is required and when the work should begin.
"It was fine," Hozza said of the pool when it was closed for the season in the latter part of August.
Regarding funding the work, no money is budgeted. Hozza told the commissioners $50,000 may be drawn from matching township recreation funds "that are sitting there. [The board has] to find the rest."
Board President Linda Snyder, after speaking with board Vice President Philip Ginder and Secretary Dennis Hower, said the $1 million Lafarge Fund could be an option for providing the remaining funding. The Lafarge account would later have to be reimbursed, as it was previously done for the Prydun Farm purchase and a bridge construction project.
