Parkland girls lax routs EHS
It was a tale of two different games for the Parkland girls lacrosse team and rival Emmaus.
In the first matchup, a 20-9 win on April 7, the Green Hornets were right there neck-and-neck with the Trojans, just one goal down at halftime.
But last Thursday afternoon, Parkland raced out to an early 5-0 lead in the first five minutes before Emmaus could even get a shot on goal. The early deficit was too much to overcome as the Green Hornets fell to the Trojans 12-5 at Troxell Middle School field.
"We've been trying to space our offense out more and keep possession more," said junior Ana Emrick, who tallied a goal and an assist. "We got to work through a lot of our plays and they worked out for us because we executed goals."
The Trojans remained unbeaten in the league for the third straight year. Their last loss actually came at the hands of Emmaus in April back in 2012. The victory was the 37th straight LVC/EPC win.
"Since we've had this [streak] for so long, I think it's a big deal to try to keep it up," said Sophie Castillo, who had four goals on the day.
Cathleen Gaffney (4 goals), Emrick, Castillo, Lexi Rice, and Mackenzie Galli scored within the first five minutes of the game as the Trojans raced out to that 5-0 advantage.
Even after Destanee Watkins broke the scoreless streak for the Green Hornets with her first of three goals on the day, Parkland jumped right back with a goal each from Castillo and Gaffney. Watkins and Grace Sullivan added two more goals in the first half, but Emmaus's deficit was at 9-3 at halftime.
The Trojans dominated the draw, winning 13 of 18 and they also doubled up the Hornets in shots on goal 18-9, and that was a big reason for the lopsided score.
"In order to get goals a lot of the time you have to win the draws," said Emrick. "It's one of the most important parts of the game because it starts the play. It gives you possession."
Maddie Dorn got on the board in the second half, but the one-two punch of Castillo and Gaffney did more damage of with three combined goals in the second half.
Freshman goalie Brie Barraco was credited with making five saves for the game.
