McGinley, volleyball team search for EPC berth

In seventh grade, Logan McGinley discovered volleyball and soon it became an epiphany for him. In fact, his life has evolved in many ways.

Now as a sophomore outside hitter for the Zephyrs, McGinley has taken the game in stride. In his short transformation, McGinley and his game has remained on a steady course that is constantly evolving.

"Last year, we were working and it was a new experience for me at the varsity level," said McGinley. "I knew I had to make some adjustments in my game. We played well most of the season, but we just didn't have that type of closeness.

"This year is different. We have a better team chemistry now. Last year, it didn't seem to be there. We're a close group and we have worked through a number of things this year."

Beginning this week, the Zephyrs remained in the hunt for an East Penn Conference (EPC) playoff spot and have clinched a postseason bid. They were ranked fourth in the District 11 power rankings.

McGinley's beginnings in the sport actually were a second reference.

"It was my basketball coach who suggested that I try volleyball in seventh grade," noted McGinley. "I knew it had some of the same skills and I knew that I could jump. I felt that I was pretty athletic and could handle it.

"It wasn't that bad and I decided to stick with it."

McGinley also didn't have to make many adjustments.

"I felt like I didn't have to get used to too many things," he said. "There were the techniques of the game and how to position yourself and your feet on the court. It was just a matter of staying focused."

Head coach George Cowitch also didn't have any doubts.

"Logan (McGinley) has been our workhorse throughout the season," said Cowitch. "He has been our 'go-to' guy in crucial spots when we need points. Not many teams have a sophomore they can trust to put the ball down. But we do, and that's what makes him special.

"Logan is a natural leader, which he also brings to the table. He does what you ask him to do and he does it well. He also makes the guys better around him."

Along with creating a positive environment on the court, McGinley has brightened areas outside the court.

McGinley volunteers his time with arts and crafts for life skills children in the school district and he also spends time with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization. As a result, McGinley has entertained thoughts of becoming a teacher possibly in a science-related field.

Until then, his focus is on helping his team.

"We're playing well," he said. "We just have to keep working."

Logan McGinley and the Zephs have clinched a district playoff berth.
