Boys lax comes from behind to beat Emmaus
Unlike the last time Parkland and Emmaus met last month, a 10-8, back-and-forth contest won by the Green Hornets, Emmaus led by a four-goal margin Monday afternoon at Orefield Middle School field in a game. The Hornets lost it in the second half as the Trojans stormed back to win 11-6.
Collin Tucker and Colin Mason combined for three goals to open the first quarter, and when Pat Camilli found the back of the net on an extra man advantage early in the second quarter, Emmaus (11-6) found itself up 4-0 and in complete control of the final regular season game.
Even after AJ DiPasquale got Parkland on the board, Ben Krauss scored with 6:57 left in the second quarter to keep a four goal edge in favor of the Green Hornets.
"We came out really slow and really flat, and we knew that," said freshman Luke Summers. "Our seniors told us to not get our heads down and that we could come back. We just had to play more aggressively, and we did that in the second, third and fourth quarter."
But then the Trojans put it into an extra gear. Summers, Gavin Saylor and Ethan Howell all scored to take it to 5-4 Emmaus heading into halftime.
Parkland fought all the way back with a goal from DiPasquale just 1:14 into the third quarter to tie the game 5-5.
Tucker took back the lead for Emmaus with a goal, but that was the final tally for the Green Hornets.
Parkland scored six straight from the 2:24 mark left in the third to the remainder of the game. Two straight from Summers, including a shot that Green Hornets senior goalie Matt Horton barely had any time to react to, gave the Trojans their first lead at 7-6 heading to the fourth.
"Coach [Schifko] has always been telling me to get to my strong hand and shoot if I have space," said Summers. "This game I realized I was able to get to where I wanted to be on the left side. I shot it high and it went right by him. I think that gave us momentum for the rest of the game."
Defensive lapses and lack of possession doomed Emmaus in the second half. A big reason for that was losing the faceoff at midfield after a goal.
Goalie Joey Stevenson (6 saves) really stepped up his play with save after save in the second half, and the Trojans defense played with more passion and aggression, only allowing six Emmaus shots in the second half.
These two teams will meet again Thursday in the semifinals of the East Penn Conference tournament at Nazareth. With Monday's win, defending league champion Parkland is the No. 2 seed and Emmaus is the No. 3 seed.
